Dutch architecture has established a distinct character in the world of design, an identity that stretches from traditional 17th-century canal houses to the urban, cutting-edge designs of Rem Koolhaas. Delfts Blauw, a residential complex by architect Frits van Dongen of de Architekten Cie., bridges traditional and modern influences to create light-filled, contemporary housing that interacts naturally with the surrounding historic cityscape. The complex, positioned near the center of Delft, the Netherlands, is comprised of town houses built around community greens and two sets of apartments located along the Westvest canal. Among the most striking modern elements are the apartments' external sun-louver screens by Hunter Douglas. These sliding screens "impart urban grandeur using modern means," according to the firm, while also increasing privacy and helping control glare and heat gain.
