UCL refurbishment features Hunter Douglas linear ceiling
Hunter Douglas has completed work at a London university’s refreshed refectory area, undertaken as part of a multi-million pound refurbishment.
The leading architectural products company manufactured and supplied 250m2 of solid timber Linear Open 89 module in white oak for part of the ceiling and vertical bulkheads of the Lower Refectory and adjacent areas at Wilkins Terrace, which is part of University College London (UCL).
The refurbishment and extension of the refectory in the Wilkins Building has created the largest catering facility on the Bloomsbury campus, catering for 324 diners.
Hunter Douglas’s premium ceiling was specified by Burwell Deakins Architects for its aesthetics, and acoustic properties and was selected after another firm was originally lined up to undertake the project.
Kevin Taylor, Specification Sales Manager at Hunter Douglas, said: “The open linear style ceiling is modern and light, and the white oak that was specified is particularly striking against the smooth white walls. It is a very stylish complement to an exceptional refurbishment and I’m very pleased to see how good it looks.
“It was the first time we have worked with Burwell Deakins Architects and since working on the UCL refurbishment, the practice has specified Hunter Douglas for a further project.”
Using solid wood linear systems enables contractors and architects to take advantage of a fully made-to-measure solution, creating any number of innovative designs because the panel and gap size is customisable.
In addition, no cutting or adjustments are required at site, which significantly reduces installation time and cost.
Hunter Douglas’s open linear wood ceilings are an all-natural and sustainable option that comes with FSC/PEFC certification. It has fire classification B-s2,d0 according to EN 13501-1, and achieves acoustic performance up to alpha w 0.70 without optional rock wool.
The beauty of choosing a Hunter Douglas open linear ceiling is that there are more than 20 species of wood to choose from and specifiers can select slats with planed, fine-sawn and rough-sawn surface finish. All panels are finished with high-quality varnish to protect the wood against moisture, dust and dirt.
