For the past 25 years, architects Cohos Evamy have focused on designing "patient-centered solutions," which emphasize good design that "improves operating efficiencies and contributes to a healthier environment for patients, staff and visitors."

These principles were clearly in evidence when the firm created the Health Research Innovation Center (HRIC) at the University of Calgary. The project consisted of two new buildings, a five story Lab and seven-story Teaching, Research and Wellness Buildings (TRW), which connect to the existing Health Sciences Centre and Heritage Medical Research Building. The architects sought to create easy movement of ideas and people from one space to another with a design that "facilitates the translation of research from laboratory benches to patient bedsides."

The design also enables easy flow of light with automated sun-tracking roller shades by Nysan Solar Control, a Hunter Douglas Company. As the sun travels around the buildings, it triggers sensors that raise and lower the shades. These smart shades feature GreenScreen® Vista fabric. The PVC-free, translucent fabric ensures interior air quality while also reducing thermal gain and eliminating glare, creating visual comfort for doctors and patients alike.
