For more than 50 years, Staatliche Realschule für Knaben in Neumarkt, Germany has operated as a state secondary school for boys. In 2009, an addition of 11 new classrooms was necessary to meet the growing demand of the school’s teaching facilities.
The link between the old and new buildings is now an inviting multifunctional recreation hall, with floor to ceiling windows, and a striking glass facade. Materials used in the addition include concrete, iron, steel and wood. The new building appears as a simple structure with quiet, uniform areas.
To make best use of natural light as well as maintain the sustainable concept of the school, the distinctive louvers of the west façade’s automated sun control system, provided by Hunter Douglas, can be adjusted to the optimal position based on the irradiate angle of the sun.
