The Baiyun International Airport in Guangzhou, China, is one of the country's busiest, ranking second in number of passengers and third in terms of cargo. The Baiyun airport - whose name means "white clouds" in Chinese - recently underwent a $2 billion extension, managed by a team of architects from the international firm of URS and the Guangdong Architect & Design Institute. Hunter Douglas architectural systems were used widely throughout the complex, including sun louvers, exterior claddings, and metal ceiling systems. The versatility of these systems allowed the team seamlessly to blend elements of indigenous architecture with modern surfaces and systems in their design. Flexible carrier systems and easy customization of surface planes accommodated such elements as a curving metal roofline and arched skylights, which echo the "grandeur found in classical Chinese architecture," according to URS.
