Brise-soleilWhen crafting a new home for the distinguished Club de la Union in Santiago, Chile, A4 Arquitectos had to strike a complex balance of elements. The long-established nature of the private social club, a respected institution in Chile, required them to create an environment of refinement and luxury. However, the club's location in the prestigious Edificio Golf 2001 building (a gleaming trapezoid of glass and steel), called for a design that would fit the building's contemporary, austere architecture. Working with architect Borja Huidobro, A4 Arquitectos created a solution that relies on exquisite materials and forms, rather than visual complexity, to evoke a feeling of sophisticated history. The architects' use of custom-designed, adjustable woodbrise window coverings from Hunter Douglas creates intimacy and tempers the light within the space. Hunter Douglas wood ceilings were also used throughout to connect with the natural beauty of the wood that covers the windows and the floors.
