A dramatic internal solar-control system created by Hunter Douglas shades the entrance atrium at Shanghai Volkswagen. Translucent fabrics suspended four stories high filter the light entering the building and create a clean, white appearance from the outside. Established in partnership with Germany, Shanghai Volkswagen has become one of China's leading manufacturing organizations. It is also one of the country's most successful joint ventures. This building was also a joint project, having been designed by Dieter Maschagam and Yang Fuqiang and Yu Wei of the Shanghai Machinery and Electricity Academy. Like the company as a whole, this facility combines the precision of European engineering with the vast energy of the booming Chinese economy.
