"Value engineering" - crafting a creative, functional design on a very tight budget - is one of an architect's most difficult challenges. At Terminal One of John F. Kennedy airport in New York, architect William Nicholas Bodouva & Associates sought to establish "a dramatic and powerful architectural design." The building's "sweeping roofline floats over a steel and glass armature, creating an image that is evocative of flight," and echoing the ground-breaking aesthetic of Eero Saarinen's TWA Terminal, which stands nearby. Starting from a $450 million budget, the firm's design garnered a number of architecture and construction awards. They specified 300C wide-panel metal ceilings because of the system's ability to provide a sustainable, low-maintenance, and durable solution that also met the project's aesthetic and acoustical requirements. The ability to customize the wide-panel system from Hunter Douglas to fit the radial, curved spaces was also an important factor.
